Subliminal – What are Subliminal Messages?
In psychology, a Subliminal refers to a stimulus or mental process below the threshold of sensation or consciousness or a stimulus perceived by or affecting someone’s mind without their being aware of it.
If we break the word Subliminal down into two, we get:
Sub – meaning under, below, beneath
Liminal – a technical term referring to something occupying a position at one, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold
So Subliminal would, in this case, denote of something below the threshold of consciousness. This is what we are going to be talking about on this post. Subliminals have become very popular nowadays, however, they have been used for years by performers and athletes to improve their self-esteem, concentration, performance, endurance and more.
Subliminals are also evident in advertising and movies. The subconscious mind is the centre of influence that receives the stimulus designed to influence the perception and behaviour of the subject.
What would you like to change?
Subliminal can help you change any area of your life that you are willing to change.
This works from the inside out, If you want to lose weight, for example, you can listen to weight loss Subliminal, you will not instantly morph into the thin body you intend or visualise, however, you may start feeling good about your body, craving healthy foods, an eagerness for more exercise and perhaps an aversion for those habits that got you overweight. Ultimately you will be propelled towards actions that bring you your desires.
What do Subliminals do?
Subliminal help you change your Subconscious Programming by sending Affirmations directly into the Subconscious Mind.
A Subliminal is a recording with positive affirmations directed at an aspect of yourself that you want to change. When listening to a subliminal you may not hear or understand the affirmations, as the frequency of the recording is usually altered, so that you do not hear it consciously.
You should be able to hear the sound yet not be able to understand or make sense of it. I have also worked with silent subliminal where you do not hear the sound but can only sense the frequency. Some Subliminal are masked with music over the sound of the affirmations.
Some people have affirmations with music that they mislabel as subliminal, these cannot be called subliminal as they are not below the threshold of the conscious mind, anything that can be picked up by the conscious mind is not directly delivered to the subconscious mind.
The power of subliminal lie in the fact that the transformational message is delivered directly into the subconscious bypassing the voice of reason or the critic. This is the reason subliminal messages are recommended for people who struggle with using affirmations for change.
For most people when they affirm a state or the desired outcome, the voice of reason corrects them because through beliefs we have wired ourselves, to tell the truth.
For most people wanting to be happy for example will affirm: “I am happy” and the logic or voice of reason which wants, to be honest, will say “no, you are not” and the subconscious mind will re-enforce the felt state or what is considered the truth.
In subliminal with music, it is the music which is a mask of the audio recording with the affirmations. Without music, you would hear all the affirmations. It is advantageous not to hear the affirmations as they sink into the subconscious mind without questioning or judgment by the voice of reason.
The direct download of Subliminal affirmations into the subconscious mind may work instantly for some people yet it may take a week, a month, or even longer for others. The exact reasons for the vast difference in experiences using subliminal are not certain. My take is that different people are at different stages of their journey or self-mastery.
Each person’s consciousness is the door to everything, if the conscious mind is deeply encumbered with the opposite of the desired outcome, that individual will have to work more and longer at making the message of the desired outcome a natural reality to the unconscious mind that it becomes obvious as truth to the conscious mind than an individual who strongly believes in the truth of what they desire.
I also think the person is not a singularity in this inner work, could it be possible that as the individual raises the desired outcome, it becomes a desired outcome for the collective within that one who is many in essence (Monad). So, in essence, perhaps the one is taking longer to breakthrough because they are working through the levels of consciousness they hold within the collective?
To some, the above statement will make sense and to others, it may not, whichever way, it is well. It is advisable that one uses the subliminal until they see the change they desire.
Subliminal messages first came into popular consciousness around 1957 when researchers James Vicary who conducted inconclusive experiments about the use of subliminal messaging in advertising and media — or at least the effects he thought these techniques were being applied to influence the masses.
In terms of visual images, subliminal messages were flashed across a screen for just a few milliseconds, too small a window for the subjects to be aware of it. For auditory messages, it would be delivered at a frequency below humans’ range of detection or hidden beneath another sound. There are those that claim that subliminal messages are to be found to show up in advertising, movies, and music.
In one study, subconscious political messages only worked on political independents, and messages about Lipton Ice Tea only worked on people who were already thirsty. Even though you can’t consciously hear” the subliminal messages, they are received by your subconscious where they run in the background of your mind to bring about the desired change. Your mind relaxes into heightened receptivity, allowing positive messages to flow into your subconscious mind without the disruption of limiting beliefs.
In a more recent study, scientist found that positive subliminal messages enhanced participants’ attitude of the self. University College London researchers such as Dr Ruud Custers, who have done studies in the investigation of cognitive and affective sources of motivated behaviours, have discovered the first notable evidence that invisible subliminal images do attract the brain’s attention on a subconscious level. It is my own observation and experience, the subconscious mind does not conform to any behaviours that are not in line with the subjects’ own reference system as related to their system of beliefs.
Self Suggestion vs Environmental Suggestion
For an individual who may be open to suggestions from external sources in making decisions, they may easily take on those suggestions presented to them as the stimulus from the environment as opposed to deep-seated referencing through core beliefs and long term entrainment.
Hypnosis is another form of subliminal message delivery to the subconscious mind. Just as it is a proven fact that no one who does not want to be hypnotised can be hypnotised, a person who is not open to change through subliminal messaging cannot see change. It has been said that “All hypnosis is self-hypnosis,” this is because the person has to convince themselves that the suggestion will work for them or the suggestion has to be delivered in a way that is in harmony with the person’s truth, in order to take effect. The old adage of “thy faith hath made thee whole” proves to be key in harnessing the power of suggestion to tap into the resources of the Unconscious mind.
My final thoughts
My observation is that Subliminal Messaging is a great tool to use in building Confidence or Faith in what you hold as your truth especially when that truth has not been completely natural to your experience, that is, when you still feel the necessity to remind yourself that it is your natural state to be what you are focusing on.
